Is Prescription Drug Addiction Really a Problem?

June 29, 2007

Recent research leaves no doubt that prescription drug addiction and dependency is becoming epidemic

Prescription drug addiction and abuse has been all over the news lately. The most recent shocker was the outcome of a survey conducted by Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA). Millions of Americans were interviewed in an effort to determine the quantity of counterfeit and fake drugs being imported into the U.S. However, the report of findings didn’t mention counterfeit drugs. Instead, it revealed that 5.4 million adults in the U.S. recently purchased prescription drugs from another country, and half of them did so because they didn’t have a prescription. If you still need proof that prescription drug addiction is a problem, that should quell any doubts.

Getting prescription drugs from another country is usually attributed to the prices. Just a few years ago, the average cost of a prescription in the U.S. was 81% higher than other wealthy nations. And since the average price of a prescription went from $28.67 in 1994 to $64.86 in 2005, more than triple the average annual inflation rate, chances are good that the comparative price hasn’t gone down. That’s a good reason to find your drugs somewhere else.

However, we’re talking about people without prescriptions. In other words, these people don’t have a medical condition that an M.D. thinks warrants taking drugs. So, what condition do they have? They have prescription drug addiction or dependency. It may have started with a doctor’s prescription, but it’s gone way past that. These drugs aren’t any better for you than heroin – it’s time to do something about it.
